Sour cherries for health – hardly any other fruit is currently being researched as intensively. But what's really behind it? Whether it's sleep, regeneration, or uric acid metabolism: the Montmorency sour cherry shows impressive potential in scientific studies.
This article will tell you what research has shown so far, why the Montmorency variety is so special, and how you can specifically benefit from it.
The most important points in brief
The Montmorency sour cherry contains more polyphenols and melatonin than any other cherry variety.
Studies show great potential of Montmorency tart cherries for sleep, recovery after exercise, inflammatory processes and uric acid metabolism.
For optimal results, high-quality sour cherry juice concentrates and capsules deliver therapeutically relevant amounts.
What makes the Montmorency sour cherry so special?
Fresh sour cherries aren't a practical option for many people in their daily lives. Their very intense, sour taste makes it difficult to eat large quantities of them. Therefore, many people opt for processed products like juice, jam, or preserves instead.
But here lies the problem: these products often contain a lot of added sugar. And it is precisely this sugar that can diminish the positive properties of the cherry.
Anyone wanting to use sour cherries specifically for their health benefits should therefore take a closer look, because not all cherries are the same. The so-called Montmorency sour cherry plays a special role. It contains a particularly high amount of polyphenols. These are natural plant compounds to which research attributes a large proportion of the observed effects.
With approximately 4.07 milligrams of polyphenols per gram, it is significantly higher than other cherry varieties. For comparison, a typical sweet cherry contains less than half that amount, at around 1.85 milligrams per gram. This makes the Montmorency sour cherry an interesting subject of research when it comes to the health benefits of sour cherries (1).
