It is characterized by its feathery, light green leaves and yellow umbels. Fennel's essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of the seeds, is rich in anethole and fenchone, which gives it its characteristic sweet and spicy aromas.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is known for its aromatic seeds, which are rich in essential oils. The main component of anise oil is anethole, which makes up to 90% of the oil and is responsible for its characteristic sweet, licorice-like scent and flavor. Anise oil possesses antispasmodic and carminative properties, making it a popular remedy for stomach upsets and flatulence.
