True lavender is smaller than its closer relatives and belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). It originates from the Mediterranean region, and the most well-known varieties today thrive in Provence, France. The fragrance and growth habit of lavender vary depending on its altitude. Our lavender grows wild on 1,000-meter-high mountain slopes, thus gaining a strong camphor content, which provides its unique, intensely floral fragrance.

It grows compactly and bushily and forms grey-green leaves in mid- and late summer, which develop into unbranched, fragrant spikes up to 8 cm long with pale to dark purple flowers.

Why are hazardous substance symbols and notices found on some child-friendly products?

Essential oils are concentrates from plants that have a variety of ingredients. Some of the ingredients are individually classified as hazardous substances according to the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, e.g. as corrosive, highly flammable and dangerous to the environment.
The law does not differentiate whether the relevant ingredient is synthetically produced or occurs naturally in the essential oil. Likewise, the regulation does not differentiate in terms of labelling whether the essential oil is bottled in 5 ml or delivered in a 50 kg barrel.
This means that even small quantities such as 5 ml must be labelled with the hazardous substance symbols and hazard phrases, even if these quantities are not harmful.
